30th May 2026: Day 12

Distance covered in the last 24 hours 168 NM, distance to Horta, Azores 1106 NM.

Downwind sailing really suits Merryn and yesterday we recorded our greatest ever distance in 24 hours. Conditions were lively but not excessive and we had a great downwind sail. The forecast now is for the winds to ease and indeed we are already seeing that. Our next step is to alter our course to the north east so we are travelling more directly towards our final destination. We’re all getting increasingly excited that the end is, if not in sight, at least getting closer.

On a day to day basis we are practising our backgammon skills, Peter is doing daily fitness exercises and Jon is becoming an expert day skipper. On the downside, Peter continued his master baking and produced some questionable cheese scones. He has promised not to repeat the recipe!
