29th May 2026: Day 11

Distance covered in the last 24 hours 154 NM, distance to Horta, Azores 1270 NM.

The winds and sea state are quite exciting but, because the weather is all behind us, it feels very comfortable and we are making terrific progress. The boat is remarkably stable, sufficient for us to have had showers and even play a game of backgammon.

Beyond that there’s not a lot to report so I thought I’d give you a little background to our sailing arrangements. There are three of us on board and we are operating a watch system with a rotating three hours on-watch with six hours rest. Watch duties consist mainly of looking out and keeping an eye on the boat and the surroundings. We may make minor tweaks to the sail configuration but for anything major two or more of us come up on deck. Off-watch is for relaxing, sleeping and cooking. Sleeping arrangements consist of two ‘hot’ bunks in the saloon and aft cabin and, at watch changes, we shuffle between berths with our personal sheet sleeping bag and pillow.

Peter valiantly continues to try to teach Astro Navigation and is also teaching Jon Day Skipper theory. On the food front we have run out of pre-prepared meals and are having to be increasingly inventive with cooking. Jon made a delicious vegetable stir-fry the other night with peppers, courgettes, carrots, onions, garlic, ginger and teriyaki sauce. My own effort last night was rather more simple.
