23rd May 2026: Day 5

Distance covered in the past 24 hours 149 NM, distance to Horta, Azores 1786 NM.

We were a bit spooked yesterday with a forecast showing we were headed towards some strong adverse winds. After a group discussion and some further input from Kai, our meteorologist, we decided to alter course and head towards Bermuda to try to skirt around the patch of bad weather. This is a little frustrating as it increases the total distance we need to cover to Horta, but we have plenty of food and are still sailing extremely well with almost no engine hours since the start of the trip. We are even using our Hydrovane (the red sail) to steer the boat and give our autopilot a rest. We’ve always called the Hydrogen Helen so she is the sole female crew but very important!

Yesterday we were spared further lessons in Astro navigation because it was too cloudy. But today the sun is out and I expect we’ll be picking up the sextant again.
