We’ve now made our way from Mallorca over to Menorca, having had a lovely week touring Mallorca’s southern and eastern coasts. We spent two nights at anchor in Cala Ponsa on the south western tip, hoping for shelter from some strong northerlies. This was a really pretty spot nestled between the cliffs but the wind was quite changeable, making all the boats swing around. On our second day we considered moving but thought ‘no-we should be OK’. Wrong answer! As night fell we came perilously close to another boat and had to find another spot. Another lesson learnt – if you think about it then do it!
We emerged from the Cala once the wind dropped, planning to head to another further east, but the wind had swung round and fresh easterlies had created quite a big swell so we headed back into Palma bay and anchored off El Arenal, enjoying a lovely swim and peaceful night.
By the next day the seas were much calmer and we headed up the coast to Puerto Colom, a lovely sheltered natural harbour, filled with fishing boats and fringed with excellent restaurants.
Our final stop was Porto Ratjada in the north east. Having found so many of the Balearic marinas completely full, we were amazed to find Merryn the only yacht at the visitor’s quay. Despite the quietness we still managed to have a tricky landing. On lifting the mooring line from the water we clearly confused the marina staff as we held aloft a loose end of rope that should have been attached to an underwater mooring. Only once safely moored, did Jono fess up that maybe we had cut through the line as we landed. Sure enough, when he dived under the boat, he found a huge length of mooring rope wrapped around the propeller and it took several dives and heroic breath holding to untangle.
