The Summer 2025 Cycle trip: Belgium to France

In the Summer of 2024 we were lucky to spend a couple of months in our chalet enjoying walks and excursions in the Alps. We had also planned a number of cycle trips – everything from gentle trips around lake Annecy to more adventurous mountain climbs. Unfortunately, Cate’s bike had other plans, and every time we set off, her bike would get a puncture! Despite no fewer than seven replaced inner tubes, one new tyre, one replaced tyre rim tape, and two trips to separate bike shops for expert repairs, the repeated punctures could not be fixed. Changing the wheel was not an option – our bikes were over twenty years old and parts were no longer available for our obsolete machines.

So… we decided it was time to buy new bikes, and picked two shiny new Trek FX3 hybrid bikes. We bought them in London, and of course, needed to get them to France. Hence the idea of another cycle trip across France. This time we decided on a North to South route, starting in Belgium (we took the Eurostar to Brussels for the start of the trip), and following the Meuse river down into France as far as Neufchateau in the northeast, following which we left the Meuse and headed across to Annecy and then on to Ste Foy.

The timetable was tight – we had to be finished in time for a friend’s 70th birthday party, and we were not fit, having spent so long sitting on our boat in the Caribbean. What could possibly go wrong?

The video!

After some delay, I have put together this video of our trip. Enjoy the music, if not the video itself!

Day 13: Duingt to Ste Foy Tarentaise

The final day! Albeit helped a little by a train ride, we cycle on from Annecy to Albertville, then take a train to Bourg St Maurice, followed by a final cycle home

Day 12: Annemasse to Duingt

Up and over on the D15 – a long ride that was not fun to start with as we encountered heavy traffic, but slowly got better and better, with a lovely descent to Annecy, passing over the Pont de la Caille. Then a great lunch in Annecy, finishing with a cycle round the lake to our hotel in Duingt.

Day 11: La Cure to Annemasse

Our first and only day in Switzerland. We cycle over the Col de la Givrine, down to Lac Léman to catch a ferry over to Yvoire, then on to Annemasse.

15th June 2025

Day 10: Le Vaudioux to La Cure

An early start to try and beat the traffic on the N5, our main access to the France/Switzerland border. We arrive in time for a lovely lunch, but too late to avoid a soaking from a passing thunderstorm

Day 9: Salins des Bains to Le Vaudioux

It seemed too good to be true, and it was! A short day with an early climb became a long day with a lot of effort pushing along steep unmade roads and open fields. It felt good to reach the hotel.

Day 8: Gy to Salins des Bains

Our cycle route today takes is along the Eurovelo 6 route for a while, alongside the Doubs river, then via Saline Royale before we eventually arrive, exhausted, at our destination.

12th June 2025

Day 7: Melay to Gy

The cycle distance and ascent were almost identical to yesterday, but it is getting hotter! We pass some lovely villages and cycle for a time along the Saône river

11th June 2025

Day 6: Neufchateau to Melay

Finally, a more relaxing day. Time to enjoy the scenery, and we end up in a charming Chambre d’hote in a small village

10th June 2025

Day 5: Saint Mihiel to Neufchateau

Another long day, crossing rough terrain and taking wrong turns. We pass the Basilica to Jeanne d’Arc for a bit of culture

9th June 2025

Day 4: Mouzon to Saint Mihiel

An exhausting day – our longest cycle yet and, we hope, the longest we will ever do! Over 114 km, including gravel paths and hills. Still, we are rewarded with spectacular scenery, historic towns and a visit to a cemetery for the soldiers who died in the first and second world wars

8th June 2025

Day 3: Monthermé to Mouzon

The weater is improving, and our daily cycling distances are getting longer. We are rewarded at the end of today’s ride with an unexpected surprise: our accomodation for the night is worthy of the French President!

Day 2: Givet to Monthermé

If only it didn’t rain. We opted for a late departure from Givet in an attempt to avoid the rain – a ploy that sadly did not work, so had a bit of a wet cycle, whilst still enjoying beautiful scenery as we a bled along the Meuse

6th June 2025

Day 1: Namur to Givet

Our first proper cycling day. Joined by our friends Sally and Joris, we follow the Meuse river gently along the towpath. A  lovely introduction to the cycle trip

5th June 2025

The trip begins: so much easier by rail!

We set off from a rainy England, taking the Eurostar to Brussels, then a local train to Namur, where we meet up with friends and ready ourselves for the cycles ahead
