10th january 2025: Day 5

Well, the forecast ‘easing’ of the weather did not happen.  Last night the seas continued to build with a combination of swell from the NW due to north Atlantic weather patterns and swell from the NE due to more local winds.  The winds continued at 22 knots gusting up to 27 knots and the seas were confused and messy. We have allowed Merryn to drift a little west of our course as she is sailing well slightly off downwind.

The main issue with the sea state is that it’s really difficult to sleep whilst being constantly tossed around in the cabin.  We’ve tried sleeping lengthwise and across but it just feels like all our major organs are sliding around inside us.  We’re both quite tired.  Hopefully the waves will start to ease soon.

Otherwise we’re in good spirits.  Five days is longer than any sea crossing we have done before so this is already an achievement.

Thanks to everyone who has posted good wishes on our blog.  For some reason we only received the messages yesterday evening so apologies for not replying sooner.  We have Starlink internet access but we only turn it on twice a day to access the world and weather, so we’ll reply soon.

  1. Sounds character building in those conditions!
Good to see you have your buoyancy aids on and you are attached to the boat!
It’s the end of the working week here in London but you probably don’t operate on those cycles any longer!
We look forward to the next instalment.

    1. Hi Jane and Stephen,
Thanks for your comments-it’s great to hear from you. Yes we now only work on cycles of the moon. We were so lucky to have a waxing moon lighting our way across the ocean. We have promised each other that we won’t go on deck without life jacket and life line, although when the seas are calm it does seem a bit OTT! Cate xx
