Gary, our talisman, brought the best of weather for a great ski week. Sadly, Kris could not join us as their cat, Gussie, has been poorly and is needing regular visits to the vet. Hopefully Gussie will be well soon and Kris may be able to join us for a few days later in the season.
With Gary we have skied in Val d-Isère, La Rosière, La Thuile and Villaroger, enjoying beautiful on-piste conditions, a walk up the mountains on skins, and a day of superb powder at the beginning of the week. After a cold start, the temperatures have warmed up and are set to continue with a spell of clear, dry weather. This also seems to have brought some unusual cloud formations. Gary, with his meteorological expertise, was able to point out the cloud formations and dispense wisdom. I believe we saw some alto-cumulus in a chaotic sky, but I will rely on Gary to correct me in the comments below. We did manage to get a couple of pictures of the clouds – particularly over Mont Blanc, seen from the top of La Rosière.

There were many highlights to the week – the company, the good food and wine, the anecdotes, but the skiing took pride of place. Heavy snowfall on the day Gary arrived, together with cold conditions, gave us the opportunity for a perfect powder day. We went up to La Rosière, hoping for a big day including a trip to Italy. We were initially disappointed as the pass to Italy was closed due to the risk of high winds, but soon found this was an advantage as we skied fantastic powder all day and all around the La Rosière resort. I took a short video of the day…
Gary and words of wisdom: who’d’ve thought it! I would’ve indeed recorded AC in a chaotic sky but perhaps sharper eyed weather observers may have broken the clouds down into their respective types and recorded them as such.
It would seem that all my pre-winter snow dances have the the desired result, I will therefore continue to dance them much to Kris’s distress.
Thanks for a wonderful week. Xx
We bow to your superior weather knowledge. Kelvin-Helmholtz no less! Great to see you and ski with you, hopefully we may meet again this Spring with Kris too.
