4th October 2020

Blimey! Looks like we made the right decision to bail out when the rains started last week. The news reports in the last couple of days have been all about the extraordinary flooding that has swept through parts of France and Italy. We have just seen photos (the picture above is from the Sunday Times) of the very road we were cycling on – down from the Col du Saint Martin to Roquebillière, passing through Saint-Martin-Vésubie – washed away in parts during the storms of the past 48 hours.

Fortunately, our own experiences of the cycle trip were very different. Beautiful, sunny weather held for the entire trip south across the Alps, and only started to turn to rain as we made our way up the Rhône Valley on the way home.

The video above gives the whole story, but if you can’t face the whole 18 minutes (and it will seem like a long 18 minutes!), we have prepared a slightly tongue-in-cheek trailer, which might prove an easier pill to swallow!

  1. Absolutely fantastic. You make it look so easy up those Col’s. Just think how super fit you’ll be for the ski season. Great video with stunning scenery And plenty of beer! Well done both of you. G & K

    1. Thank you both so much! The thought of beer as our reward definitely made the cols easier. And congratulations: I suspect you may the the only people to have sat through the whole video- you also deserve a beer!
