Another big day – the longest climb (and descent) yet of the season! We joined Suzanne and Chris from Alpine Experience, to ski the descent from Col Pers (above Bonneval Sur Arc) to Le Fornet, above Val d’Isère. This is another classic free-ride route in the Espace Killy ski area, but made extra challenging by the lack of any lifts. Instead of a short traverse from the uppermost lifts in Le Fornet, we skinned up the valley all the way from the hamlet of Laisinant at about 1900m to the col at 3026m. As the climb also involved a short downhill section from the Col d’Iseran, the total ascent (according to Cate’s Strava app) was 1259m! No wonder we were tired!
The ski down was lovely: warm, sunny conditions with plenty of opportunities to ski untracked slopes. Chris got a bit of insider information, from a group of French skiers on the Col, that the Gorge du Malpasset was open, so we finished the day with an exit through the dramatic and narrow gorge, before returning to Le Fornet.
