22nd October 2025

Sitting indoors while the rain pours down outside, it is hard to believe that we had such beautiful weather for the first week of our return to the Alps. We made the most of it, with long walks every day and even an overnight trip to a mountain refuge.

We started with a walk up from Tignes Les Brévières to the Refuge La Martin, just below the foot of the Savinne glacier that spills down from the Dôme de la Sache. The views, both of the glacier, and looking down the valley towards Lac de Chevril and onwards to the Bellevarde mountain, were superb. In fact, the trip was so good that we decided to repeat it the next day! This time, having reached the refuge, and after a short lunch stop, we carried on up to the closest point to the glacier that we could reach. Returning to the unmanned hut, we stayed the night, warming ourselves with the old wood burning stove in the hut and eating a carbonara that we had brought up from home. The next day, rather than just retrace our steps, we walked up the valley before descending to Tignes les Boisses, and then back to the car parked in Les Brévières.

The next day was to be our last before the weather changed. We Headed up to the Beaufortain and walked from the Ville des Glaciers up to the Col de la Seine for some fine views of Mont Blanc and over the col into Italy.

We are now sitting out the bad weather at home. Rain is forecast for pretty much the whole week, so we have had plenty of time to sort through our photos, and I have even made a short video of our stay in the refuge, posted below…
