An Atlantic Voyage : 2024 - 2025
Our plans finally came to fruition. After months, if not years, of preparations for the boat (at eye watering expense!), Merryn was ready for a Voyage across the Atlantic. The question remains… was her crew ready?
We planned the trip in stages, starting with a 540NM sail across to Madeira. From there we headed south to the Canary Islands, a comparatively short trip of around 250NM. In the winter we met up with the Vikings explorers – about 60-70 crew on board 22 yachts, a mix of mono and multi hull vessels. After some preparations in the Canaries, we embarked on the bigger passages: an 880NM trip down to the Cape Verde Islands, followed by the big one: some 2300NM all the way across the Atlantic, following the trade winds, to Grenada. 13th February 2025: the arrival
31st January 2025: Day 15
More than anything else, thank you to so many of you who have followed our posts and sent words of encouragement. It has meant a great deal, and kept us going through the difficult days of the passage. We have not been able to reply to all comments, but have appreciated each and every one. Thank you!
7th December 2024: We reach the start line!
We return to Gran Canaria and to our boat, Merryn. A disappointing start as we discover the repairs we had requested from the boatyard have not been done, whilst other unwanted jobs have been (!), but we have been able to sail round the island to the Las Palmas and we are now moored on the pontoon with our fellow Vikings Explorers sailors.
9th November 2024: An interlude!
Merryn has been put on the hard in Pasito Blanco for some minor repairs, and we have flown back home for a short break. We have spent a week in the UK, visiting Ros and Godric in their new Somerset home, taking in a concert and an exhibition, then out to France. The weather has been exceptional, so we have been enjoying some mountain walking and meeting up with an old friend of Cate’s.
16th October 2024: Tenerife and Gran Canaria
We continue our little tour of the Canaries, visiting Tenerife with its spectacular volcanic peak, then to Gran Canaria – our final port of call before the Viking Rally starts later in the year. Plenty of sightseeing, an unexpected meet up with my sister and niece, and time to get some repairs sone on Merryn.
24th September 2024: La Gomera, Canary Isles
Our first island in the Canaries group – La Gomera. Not as well known as some of its neighbours, La Gomera is a great place for walks and enjoying the countryside. We rented a car to explore and went on some spectacular walks – our aching legs and sore knees are testament to the nature of the trails!
