An Atlantic Voyage : 2024 - 2025

Our plans finally came to fruition. After months, if not years, of preparations for the boat (at eye watering expense!), Merryn was ready for a Voyage across the Atlantic. The question remains… was her crew ready?

We planned the trip in stages, starting with a 540NM sail across to Madeira. From there we headed south to the Canary Islands, a comparatively short trip of around 250NM. In the winter we met up with the Vikings explorers – about 60-70 crew on board 22 yachts, a mix of mono and multi hull vessels. After some preparations in the Canaries, we embarked on the bigger passages: an 880NM trip down to the Cape Verde Islands, followed by the big one: some 2300NM all the way across the Atlantic, following the trade winds, to Grenada. Follow our voyage on this page – just click on the links below.

13th February 2025: the arrival

It has taken us nearly two weeks to recover from the voyage – sleeping, partying and relaxing into Island life. We have finally managed to put together the final blog of the Atlantic Voyage. The Viking rally organisers have kindly let us use some of their pictures, so we have a little slideshow of  our fellow sailors, and have also added a video of the voyage itself.

31st January 2025: Day 15

Landfall! We have arrived, drunk rum punches, checked in and are ready to sleep.
More than anything else, thank you to so many of you who have followed our posts and sent words of encouragement. It has meant a great deal, and kept us going through the difficult days of the passage. We have not been able to reply to all comments, but have appreciated each and every one. Thank you!

30th January 2025: Day 14

Just passing to the south of Barbados – we are almost there!

29th January 2025: Day 13

The sun is shining, the nights full of stars and we have only 300 nautical miles to go!

28th January 2025: Day 12

The rough weather and big seas return, just as we thought we were over the worst!

27th January 2025: Day 11

Only 620 nautical miles to go.  The wind and seas are a little calmer so we hope that we will really enjoy the final days of our adventure.

26th January 2025: Day 10

Lots of squalls bringing torrential rain. Just 785 NM to go!

25th January 2025: Day 9

Rough conditions, but we are making excellent progress. Just 930 NM to go!

24th January 2025: Day 8

Halfway! (we think!)

23rd January 2025: Day 7

We are approaching the roughest patch, with big waves and gusty conditions. We get a bit of time out to chat to the rally fleet online

22nd January 2025: Day 6

Still making good progress as the temperature rises and the waves get bigger

21st January 2025: Day 5

At noon today we had sailed 654 nautical miles with only 1586 to go!  We are going really well compared to the rest of the fleet, although obviously it’s not a race.

20th January 2025: Day 4

The Egret has flown.  Meanwhile we are settling in to life on the Ocean.

19th January 2025: Day 3

We’ve just picked up a hitchhiker!

18th January 2025: Day 2

All well but windy with us whilst some of our fellow Vikings have had a few mishaps!

17th January 2025: Day 1 of the Second Leg

A windy crossing with big swell is forecast but there’s no sign of this easing so we and our fellow Vikings departed Mindelo this morning.

16th January 2025: Cape Verdes

A brief interlude, with four days in the Cape Verdes. We have been busy – more boat preparations, re-stocking, repairs and so on. But it has not all been work – we have found time to party and to explore Mindelo and the neighbouring island of Santo Antao

13th January 2025: Day 8

Land ahoy! After six and a half days, and 930 NM we have arrived in Mindelo, just in time for a celebratory beer in the marina bar.

12th January 2025: Day 7

Nearly there! Still making good progress in strong winds and big seas, but already anticipating the cold beers on our arrival!

11th January 2025: Day 6

We catch a fish (sort of!)

10th January 2025: Day 5

A sleepless night with big waves, hopefully calming a bit now

9th January 2025: Day 4

Drama on the high seas!  Our spinnaker pole breaks forcing an emergency repair.

8th January 2025: Day 3

Learning to cope with life inside a washing machine! The sea state has got bigger and we are practicing our down wind techniques

7th January 2025: Day 2

It’s the evening of our second day and the wind and swell are picking up!

6th January 2025: Day ONE!

We’re on our way to Mindelo, Capo Verde

5th January 2025: Day -1

Nearly ready to go – time to fit in a bit of survival practice

4th January 2025: Day -2

Final preparations, provisioning, and the skipper’s briefing. Looks like there will be no turning back now!

23rd December 2024: Final preparations

Time for some socialising with fellow rally sailors, seminars, last-minute jobs, encounters with Star Wars, and a trip back to the UK for Cate’s birthday with friends, and a family Christmas.

7th December 2024: We reach the start line!

We return to Gran Canaria and to our boat, Merryn. A disappointing start as we discover the repairs we had requested from the boatyard have not been done, whilst other unwanted jobs have been (!), but we have been able to sail round the island to the Las Palmas and we are now moored on the pontoon with our fellow Vikings Explorers sailors.

9th November 2024: An interlude!

Merryn has been put on the hard in Pasito Blanco for some minor repairs, and we have flown back home for a short break. We have spent a week in the UK, visiting Ros and Godric in their new Somerset home, taking in a concert and an exhibition, then out to France. The weather has been exceptional, so we have been enjoying some mountain walking and meeting up with an old friend of Cate’s.

16th October 2024: Tenerife and Gran Canaria

We continue our little tour of the Canaries, visiting Tenerife with its spectacular volcanic peak, then to Gran Canaria – our final port of call before the Viking Rally starts later in the year. Plenty of sightseeing, an unexpected meet up with my sister and niece, and time to get some repairs sone on Merryn.

24th September 2024: La Gomera, Canary Isles

Our first island in the Canaries group – La Gomera. Not as well known as some of its neighbours, La Gomera is a great place for walks and enjoying the countryside. We rented a car to explore and went on some spectacular walks – our aching legs and sore knees are testament to the nature of the trails!

18th September 2024: Spain to Madeira – the video!

A slightly delayed posting of the video I filmed during our crossing from Spain to Madeira at the beginning of the month.

14th September 2024: Madeira

We spend a couple of weeks exploring these lovely islands. From the tranquility and beaches of Porto Santo, via the bustle of Funchal market, to the beautiful walks along the levadas of the mountainous main island

29th August 2024: Spain to Madeira

The first passage of our Atlantic adventures. How will Merryn cope, and, more importantly, how will we cope?

I’ll be updating this blog each day of the trip, so keep looking!
