19th january 2025

Today is beautiful, warm and sunny with cotton wool puffs of fair-weather cloud dotting the sky.  The seas feel calmer although the swell is 2.5m, and we have a following wind of 15 knots blowing us westwards.  We have kept the same sail plan so Jonathan hasn’t had to do any scary boat gymnastics on the foredeck!  We slept much better last night – perhaps you can tell.

I was just bemoaning the lack of things to photograph or write about when we discovered that we have a hitchhiker.  This poor egret circled the boat and landed. It looks quite stunned and has clearly blown a long way offshore.  It was wandering around the boat for a while, took off, circled and re-landed.  It’s now in the cockpit whilst we are making dinner down below.  I’m not sure how long it might stay with us.

A dove landed on our boat when we were on passage from Sardinia to Menorca about 50 miles from shore. It stayed with us, riding on a spreader, until we made landfall and it flew ashore.  Hopefully it survived in its new home.  Whether this bird will stay with us all the way to the Caribbean remains to be seen.
